FREERIDE WORLD TOUR 2017
TAOS SKI VALLEY

We are proud and excited to return in 2017 as a 4 Star Freeride World Tour Qualifying event. Taos is the oldest FWQ event in the Americas and several of the athletes who have competed here have gone on to qualify for the elite Freeride World Tour.

Now more than a decade old, we remain known as an athlete-centric event that features the best terrain, parties and people in the Rocky Mountain southwest.

Taos will, for the second year, host a 2 Star Competition on March 2nd. The 4 Star and Masters, those 40 and over qualify, will compete on March 3rd & 4th (March 5th weather day).

All 2 Star and 4 Star competitors need a FWQ/IFSA membership to register. Click here to get a FWQ/IFSA membership.

VENUES

Representing some of the best double-diamond terrain in the country, the venues for this event showcase Taos' toughest terrain. Kachina Peak and the West Basin Ridge are littered with tight lines, cliffs and rocks. Venues will be determined by the ski patrol, chief of race and event staff and are subject to change depending upon snow and weather conditions. Download a Taos Ski Valley trail map.

Visual Inspection Only for Kachina Peak Venue: We are instituting a visual inspection only for the final day on Kachina. This venue will be closed to the public and to athletes prior to the event. Failure to abide by this or any other closure at Taos will result in a disqualification.

Venues are determined by judges and event organizers based on snow condition.

JUDGING

Judging criteria is sanctioned by the freeride world tour, and is used at all fwt events as well as fwt qualifying events. We expect some changes due to the global harmonization in judging standards/criteria. The final standards have not been announced yet. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Taos remains a 4 Star FWQ (Freeride World Qualifying) event, all competitors who wish to compete must obtain a FWQ athlete license to participate, and results will count towards global FWQ standings as well as towards eligibility for the Freeride World Tour (FWT).

Taos will again host a 2 Star Competition this year and all competitors who wish to compete must obtain a FWQ athlete license to participate.

REGISTRATION

Because Taos is a 4* FWQ event, we do not offer "open" or first come, first served registration. FWQ 4* event athlete slots will be filled based upon the seeding order of an athlete's FWQ overall points. Points from any FWQ event (including events run and managed last year by MSI) count towards an athlete’s overall standings. PLEASE NOTE: MSI (Subaru Freeskiing Series) events held during the 2015-16 season are not sanctioned by the FWT and those events do not award points to athletes. Results from an MSI freeride event(s) may be taken into account in a wild card situation.

The event will be filled based upon FWQ standings, starting no later than 21 days prior to the event. Athletes will be notified at that time that they have been accepted to the event.

Non-seeded athletes will be accepted on a space available basis.

We do expect to be able to host a limited number of non-seeded athletes and these spots will be filled on a first-come, first served basis, after seeded athletes have confirmed their participation.

There will also be a highly limited number of wild card entries awarded to athletes who have demonstrated top level results in similar competitions or who have outstanding resumes in regards to athletic achievement.

ATHLETE LICENSE

As part of the FWQ, Taos will require all athletes to have or obtain prior to competing an FWT athlete license. You cannot register for this license through Taos or at the event. You must register and obtain your license prior to arrival in Taos.

2017 IFSA/FAQ adult license are now available on Member Pro.

FINAL WORDS

We understand that the ongoing development of big-mountain freeriding events, the situation with MSI’s stand alone tour and the new partnership with the IFSA and the FWT has made the current landscape for athletes more complex, however we feel that the changes occurring will benefit both the sport and the athletes.

It is our goal to work as closely with the athlete community as possible to address concerns and questions regarding the Taos FWQ event as well as the broader changes that are occurring. Please let us know if you have any questions or thoughts regarding the Taos FWQ event or if we can assist in any way.
