Mountain Fresh Water

Our tap water at Taos Ski Valley actually is spring fed from snowmelt. We think it is the best tasting water around – certainly much better than bottled water - and we are excited to share it with you!

So new for the 2016-17 season we will be discontinuing the sale of plastic disposable water bottles, and instead will be offering reusable bottles for the same price. We have placed water bottle refill stations throughout our resort facilities to make filling up your reusable bottle with fresh, Rocky Mountain water a breeze.

But…why?

We named this initiative “Hydrate Locally. Help Globally.” because we truly feel that the simple act of using reusable bottles instead of disposable plastic bottles at home can have a significant positive impact on our global community.  Single-use bottled water is a practice that wastes resources, creates non-biodegradable waste, and places an undue burden on the consumer. Take a look at the facts below and decide for yourself!

Energy

  • Hold up a bottle of water and imagine it a quarter full. That is how much crude oil is used to manufacturer, fill, and transport a single bottle of water.
  • The United States uses 17 million barrels of oil annually to produce single-use water bottles. That’s equivalent to the fuel used by 1,000,000 cars a year.

Waste

  • On average, only 20% of plastic disposable bottles are recycled
  • A plastic bottle will take 400-1,000 years to decompose. With 40 billion plastic bottles ending up in the United States’ landfills and oceans each year that will add up quick!

Water

  • Producing a single liter of bottled water requires three liters of fresh water
  • Bottled water costs over 1,000+ times more than tap water
  • Tap water is more heavily tested and regulated than bottled water. In fact, a recent National Resource Defense Council study found that 1/3 of bottled water violated industry standards for water quality.
  • Tap water consistently wins over bottled water in blind taste tests

Here at Taos Ski Valley, this program will remove around 10,000 single-use half-liter bottles from our waste stream annually. Therefore, in doing so we will save 15,000 liters of fresh water and 1,250 liters of crude oil, which is equal to about 2.5 metric tons of CO2 annually.
