Taos Renaissance

The Future of Taos

We live where the Rockies begin. Where Native North American and Hispanic cultures blend with European influences. Where the iconic terrain on the slopes of Kachina Peak is preserved by independent ownership and a clear vision.

Today, we’re in the midst of a $300M revitalization to improve the resort we call home. With the support of a community who are proud stewards of this place and the planet, we’re guided by the belief that growing better is more important than growing bigger.

BETTER, NOT BIGGER

Surrounded by wilderness, Taos is fortunate to have natural boundaries that allow the resort to prioritize what matters most. We favor intimacy over expansion and unique character over familiarity. We’re building and strengthening the things that set us apart, without losing touch with our roots. Taos Ski Valley is redefining what a modern mountain resort can be.

INDEPENDENT

On and off the slopes, Taos Ski Valley’s undeniable character sets it apart from other resorts. We maintain the friendly, warm, and hospitable spirit of Northern New Mexico. We embrace the eclectic influences that create our unique flavor: infusing chocolate with chilis, hiding martinis in the trees, and bringing an inviting feel to the big mountain experience. We are an independent resort and we believe in maintaining the values that have set Taos Ski Valley apart since 1955.

ENVISIONING THE FUTURE

Exploring the resort, you’ll see the revitalization firsthand. The energy of the ski experience pours into the village from its heart in the mountain plaza. On the mountain, the Kachina Peak Lift and state-of-the-art Children’s Center cater to guests of all ages and abilities. More than amenities and improvements to the guest experience, the revitalization welcomes the next generation to Taos through connection.

ON-MOUNTAIN IMPROVEMENTS

Skiing and riding are at the heart of the Taos Ski Valley experience. The 2014 construction of the Kachina Peak chairlift was the first of numerous on-hill improvements to enhance skiing and riding opportunities. Additional chairlift upgrades include a new Gondolita and the replacement of Lift 1 with Taos’s first high-speed quad.

Another key area of focus has been comprehensive advancements in snowmaking technology, reach and efficiencies. Taos has invested heavily in snowmaking throughout the mountain to ensure quality snow and coverage in the winter season. Mountain crews have also completed tree glading work expanding terrain accessibility and improving overall forest health.

Finally, the resort has invested in improved infrastructure and stronger partnerships with utility companies will help improve wireless signals and telecommunication networks for guests throughout the Ski Valley.

VILLAGE CORE REDEVELOPMENT

Recognizing the importance of a mountain experience connected to a vibrant core, the revitilization of Taos includes a new village at the foot of the slopes complementing its one-of-a-kind surroundings. A re-energized pedestrian village and plaza will include a riverwalk experience, new retail shops and will provide a year-round gathering point for visitors, events and programs.

The opening of The Blake at Taos Ski Valley, an alpine getaway just steps from Lift 1, represents the first step towards upgrading the quantity and diversity of lodging options at the resort. Its architecture and design take their cue from the area’s rich cultural heritage and surrounding mountain landscape. Distinct details are woven throughout the nooks and crannies, and public spaces allow guests to absorb the views and energy of the surrounding mountains.

CREATE A SUSTAINABLE FOUR-SEASON RESORT

Northern New Mexico’s diverse climate makes Taos Ski Valley a perfect destination for year-round recreation. A proposed mountain bike park, Via Ferrata, Alpine Aerial Adventure, and new hiking trails will enable visitors to explore more of the surrounding mountains and wilderness, summer and winter.

Additional off-hill programming will play a key role in promoting ongoing cultural events, music festivals and community development. Door-to-door transportation services will increase to make it easier to explore the town of Taos and it’s abundant arts and cultural offerings.

MASTER DEVELOPMENT PLAN

On-mountain improvements don’t stop with ski terrain accessibility. In an effort to enhance the four-season resort experience, Taos Ski Valley is working closely with the U.S. Forest Service to make the most of Northern New Mexico’s diverse climate. Last Fall, Taos Ski Valley submitted an amendment to its current Master Development Plan (MDP) to the Forest Service for their review. The MDP Amendment outlines the proposed on-mountain improvements to enhance the resort's year-round offerings. View the Master Development Plan presentation here.

PROPOSED “VIA FERRATA”

The “Via Ferrata,” also known as the “Iron Road,” is a protected climbing route consisting of metal rungs, ladders, cables and bridges. This system has been popular in Europe for decades because it allows novices to explore rock climbing in a safe and controlled environment. Climbers are continuously secured to cable throughout the course. This one to two hour course includes relatively easy, moderate and hard routes, and will be located in the upper bowl near Lift 4.

NORDIC TRAILS

Taos Ski Valley will develop a 10km nordic course for public use and racing. The rolling hills and wide terrain will play host to regional and national competitions, as well as families and novice skiers. During the summer months, Taos Ski Valley guests may use the course for mountain biking.
